Member of Parliament for the Ningo Prampram Constituency Sam Nartey George has described as misleading, an address to the House by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on the state of sanitation in Accra.

Addressing Parliament on February 8, 2018 on his 2nd State of the Nation speech, the president had said his government would spend some GH¢ 200 million in addressing the sanitation menace in the country.

“Apart from the systematic efforts being made to resolve the legacy of inherited debts in the sector, government will spend, this year, an amount of GH¢200 million to address the vexed issue of sanitation,” the president told Parliament.

But speaking on TV3’s New Day Tuesday, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) MP observed that a year after that promise was made, the sanitation problem does not seem to be getting on as people keep losing their lives each time it rains.

The MP further observed that the latest case, which resulted in the loss of four lives, precisely after Sunday’s downpour, exposed the president.

“We have not entered the rainy season but what happened on Sunday is a clear example that the president misled Parliament,” he said.

“He came and peddled untruths to us when he told us it [sanitation] has improved significantly.”

The NDC legislator claimed the president had said there was a significant improvement in sanitation with the increase of solid waste management from 16% to 53%, something he said is not true.

According to him, “it is clear evidence that the president is misleading us [Parliament]” and noted it is a serious offense to mislead Parliament.
