Former Member of Parliament for Jomoro Constituency, Samia Yaba Christina Nkrumah, has announced her intention to stage a comeback for the Jomoro parliamentary seat as an independent candidate after leaving parliament more than a decade ago.

Ms. Nkrumah who got into the legislature on the ticket of the Convention Peoples Party (CPP) revealed she was going to make a return on a campaign platform devoid of partisan politics.

“I am running as an independent to re-enter parliament, the Jomoro constituency, and independent means putting Ghana first, fighting the extreme partisanship that has not delivered to our people. So independent, the independent card, I believe is a new way of doing politics, where you are ready to work with others to make sure that good things happen for your people. I don’t want us to be extremely partisan,” she said.

She explained that the Nkrumaist ideology, a banner under which she derives her political ethos appealed to persons of various backgrounds, hence a rationale for running independent in the upcoming election.

Ms. Nkrumah was elected as MP for Jomoro on the ticket of the CPP after she defeated incumbent Lee Ocran in 2008.

The daughter of Ghana’s first president, Kwame Nkrumah advised constituents to move away from the de facto two-party system which was currently in place, arguing that it “has not worked, if we want to be honest”.
