Samira replies tribal bigots in NDC over 'Fulani' comment

Second Lady Hajia Samira Bawumia has passionately urged voters to reject the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and its candidate, former President John Mahama, citing their tendency to engage in tribal politics.

Some members of the NDC have expressed disdain and opposed the election of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the upcoming December 7 general elections, a victory that would allow the party’s flagbearer’s wife, Samira Bawumia—a Fulani—to become Ghana’s First Lady, as Fulanis are considered foreigners.

During her campaign tour, while introducing Sylvester Matthew Tetteh, MP for the Bortianor-Ngleshie Amanfro Constituency, Samira emphasized that the NDC's actions display a glaring disregard for Ghanaians.

She urged the electorate not to entrust such a party, one that disrespects people based on their tribe, with political power.

“It sounds funny, but it also saddens me that the NDC says, ‘Why should they allow a Fulani woman to be First Lady?’ They did not say that I lack the competence to serve as First Lady. They did not say that I lack knowledge, or that I am not articulate and eloquent, or that I lack the strength to fulfill the role. Rather, they are concerned about my tribe and where I come from.

“Fellow Ghanaians, if the NDC does not respect me, then they do not respect you either. So, will you give political power to those who do not respect you, who think you are a second-class citizen, or who believe they are superior to you?"

With just 27 days remaining until Ghana's general elections, the contest between Dr. Bawumia and John Mahama is intensifying.

Still, Hajia Samira is upbeat and exhorts Ghanaians to reject the NDC's tribalistic stance and adopt a more inclusive and forward-thinking leadership.
