The National Communication Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Sammy Gyamfi, has brushed aside suggestions that Ghanaians should not vote for the flagbearer of his party, former President John Dramani Mahama, because he can serve for only one term.

According to him, assertions that Mahama would not be able to turn the country’s economy around in four years are flawed because some of the greatest leaders of the world ruled for only a short time but they were able to make significant impacts.

He gave the example of Jesus Christ, whose ministry on earth lasted for about 3 years, but is remembered to this day.

He added that former President Mahama has proven that he has what it takes to fix all of the mess caused by the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo/Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia-led government in 4 years.

“For all great leaders, their greatness was defined not by the longevity of their tenure in office, but by the impact they made within the shortest possible time. The greatest human being, for me, was a man called Jesus, who lived in a place called Israel.

"His real ministry on earth was from age 30 to 33; 3 years. Look at the impact he made… even in the Bible, you will see kings whose reign was very short but they made a great impact," he said.

The NDC communication officer added, “If four years is enough for Akufo-Addo and Bawumia to destroy Ghana, four years is enough for Mahama, the nation builder, to rebuild Ghana.”

He also gave the example of the late former President of South Africa, Nelson Mandela, who was president of the country for only a few years but is regarded by many as the greatest African ever.

“Look at Nelson Mandela, after he fought for the freedom of South Africans, he became president for a short period but look at the impact he made. Today, Mandela and Kwame Nkrumah are considered as the greatest Africans ever.”
