School children given 'PITO' for lunch

It will appear normal for every parent to discourage a child from taking alcoholic beverages BUT strangely that’s not the case with some parents in Aprekukrom in the Bono Ahafo region.

Mothers in the small farming community rather strangely package a local brew called Pito for their children to take to school as part of their lunch packs.

Heads of schools in the Sunyani West village have come under intense protests from the parents for decreeing against the local brew.

Some of the parents who are angry with the school authorities in an interview with XYZ News said the local brew is non-alcoholic and harmless to the children.

According to them, the teachers must allow their children take the beverage since they have no money to get other beverage as lunch for them.

Some of the parents also added that because of the level of poverty in the area they could not always afford to give their children money to attend school.

One of them who declined to mention her name said the local drink was very nutritious for children and that the practice was not something new in the area and adjoining settlements.
