Two beauty contestants who were university students died on Thursday, 16 August when strong sea waves swept them into the ocean as they stood on some rocks close to the shore for a photoshoot at the Oasis beach at Cape Coast in the Central Region.

They were in the area as part of the University Students Association’s annual congress which was being held at the University of Cape Coast.

A student leader, Joshua Asafu, told Class91.3FM’s mid-day news 12Live that the incident happened between 6 and 7PM while the Face of USAG contestants took photos at the beach.

One body has been found but the other is still unaccounted for.

The deceased were Sarah Kwarteng of the University of Education, Mampong Campus; and Lily Ampofua Asiedu of the University of Ghana.

“The tides were so high, they actually took about four of the people who were at the beach, and divers who were around were able to rescue two people alive. By the time they had rescued the third person [Lily], she had already passed on. They are yet to find the fourth person [Sarah]”, Joshua recounted.

The Public Relations Officer of the Central Regional Police Command, DSP Irene Oppong, has also confirmed the incident to Class News.

The retrieved body has been deposited at the morgue.
