Sekyere West fails to achieve target of voters' registration

Mampong (Ash), April 7, GNA-The Sekyere West district of Ashanti registered about 73,874 instead of 81,827 people it registered in 2000. The provisional figure was quoted by Mr Ali Osman, the District Electoral Officer, in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Mampong on Wednesday said the prediction to register more than the 2000 figure was based on the enthusiasm of the exercise at the early stages of the exercise.

He explained that some settler farmers in the Sekyere West district's portion of the Afram Plains had also left for areas that could not be traced and said that also accounted for the shortfall in the figure.

Mr Osman who gave the breakdown of the number of women and men who registered, said however, that more women registered than men. In all, he said, 38,899 women registered compared to 34,975 men who registered.

Other provisional figures released included the Mampong constituency, which recorded 43,447 registered voters out of which 23,112 were women, while the remaining 20,335 were men. In the Nsuta-Kwamang constituency, out of the 30,427 people who registered, 15,787 were women.
