Seminar On Fiscal Policy

The Vice-President, Prof John Atta Mills, has charged researchers of offer concrete suggestions on how to overcome problems they identify during their research. This, he said, will help in policy formulation Prof. Mills was opening a seminar on fiscal policy, organised by the African Economic Research Consortium and the Centre for Policy Analysis in Accra. Prof. Mills described policy making in Africa as a difficult task, because of material and human constraints. The Vice President said in the area of fiscal policy, few countries can claim they are not under any pressure. He said it is for this reason that linkages between researchers and policy makers are welcome. Prof. Mills tasked participants at the seminar to concentrate on areas such as broadening of the tax net, expenditure management and proper accountability of public spending. The Executive Director of the African Economic Rearch Consortium, Prof. Benno Ndulu, pledged his organisation's support to continuous and will informed debate. He said a new concept, which is creeping into fiscal policy, is a demand for value for money by the tax payer.
