Seven persons have sustained bullet wounds after the police reportedly fired gun shots in an attempt to disperse aggrieved farmers who were demonstrating against Newmount in Akyem today (Tuesday).
The aggrieved farmers have accused Newmount of acting in bad faith and failing to compensate them after destroying their farmlands.
Speaking in an interview with Rainbow Radio, Kofi Denkyira, Chairman of the Newmont Akyem Affected Farmers Association,(NAAFA), slammed the police for abusing their rights by firing gun shoots and tear gas at the demonstrators unprovoked.
He claims the association notified the police over the intended demonstration and were given the greenlight to organize it.
He has also accused traditional leaders in the area of conspiring with Newmount to cheat farmers whose farmlands have been destroyed due to activities of the company.
The persons who were shot have been sent to New Abirem whilst three of them has been transferred to Koforidua Regional Hospital for treatment. More soon...
