The Shai-Osudoku Constituency branch of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has expressed shock over the untimely death of two children in the locality and has consequently called on the District Assembly to as a matter of urgency, “expedite works on the rehabilitation of the bridge and fix the water supply pipeline that resulted in the acute water shortage that led to the unfortunate passing of these children.”
Two siblings drowned in the Kpong Irrigation Canal at Asutsuare in the Shai Osudoku District of the Greater Accra Region when they went to the canal to fetch water.
“Our outfit received information about the incident and proceeded to the scene where we discovered that one of the children had drowned while his brother was still alive. Unfortunately, he also died on the way to the Akuse Hospital,” Superintendent Asare Nyarko of the Akuse Police Command confirmed.
According to an eyewitnesses, “The boy and his sister went to the canal to fetch water and in the process the girl’s bucket fell into the water. She stretched to get the bucket but in the process fell into the water.”
The boy, Obed, in his attempt to rescue his sister, Yamo, also drowned. In a statement signed by the constituency secretary, Jones Aryertey, the deaths of the children could have been avoided.
“This tragedy which resulted in the death of these young, innocent lives is preventable… In order to avert the reoccurrence of similar tragedies, we call on all stakeholders to priorities the lives of the affected communities and expedite action on the rehabilitation works in order to alleviate the hardship visited on the constituents, directly or remotely, as a result of the delays.” The statement said.
