Former Vice-President and the opposition Zimbabwe People First leader, Dr. Joice Mujuru on Monday received a global award in recognition of her “bravery and courage” as a high profile African woman who displayed bravery and tenacity during the Zimbabwe battle.

The award was presented to Dr. Mujuru at the International Sheroes Forum in Dubai, a global initiative that gathers leading women in all spheres of life.

She was accompanied by two other leading Zimbabwean female opposition politicians Priscilla Misihairabwi-Mushonga (MDC) and MDC-T vice-president Thokozani Khupe.

In her acceptance speech at the Sheroes Forum 2016 conference in Dubai, Dr.Mujuru said she respected women for their will to survive against all odds.

“It is with great humility that I accept this award. It is the first award that I have received since I became ZimPF leader. I, therefore, would like to dedicate this award to the women of Zimbabwe, who have shown their unwavering support for me and my family through prayers,” Mujuru said.

I have great respect for women because they have demonstrated immense courage in the face of abject poverty and have remained steadfast as they strive to look after their families. I also dedicate the award to all women braving the harsh environment we live in and those encouraging others to make a difference.

Mrs. Priscilla Misihairabwi-Mushonga, who accompanied Mujuru alongside MDC-T vice-president Thokozani Khupe, said the ZimPF leader deserved the recognition she got.

“Mujuru has shown courage and bravery during the struggle, and the way she carried herself following the horrible death of her husband. Many are now nudging her towards creating a united effort as we confront the system,” Misihairabwi-Mushonga said.

On her part MDC-T vice-president Thokozani Khupe, said, ““It is heart-warming that the world recognizes her for her bravery in the face of adversity. We all know how she has been vilified and we are happy that some people even beyond our borders are taking note of her work. The award is good for her, for the party and for Zimbabwe.”

The International Sheroes Forum is an event that brings together African women who are blazing a trail in the public and private sectors to discuss how best to promote women's empowerment in politics and business.

The Forum also featured panel discussions and interactive sessions, and offers participants the opportunity to network with powerful women and create new friendships.
