Former Deputy Communications Officer for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Fred Agbenyo, has shot down calls for the de-politicization of crime in the country.

According to him, the ruling government led by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo were elected to "protect and ensure the safety of Ghanaians and so if that is not being done, there is the need to talk about it".

His comments are in tandem with the NDC's General Secretary of the NDC, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, who is reported to have vowed never to cease politicising crime, but at variance with another opposition stalwart, Koku Anyidoho.

NDC will continue to politicize crime

Mr Asiedu Nketiah, on Tuesday, told Kwame Nkrumah Tikesie on Okay FM that the politicization of criminals was first started by the NPP and accused the ruling party of having recruited Delta Force members into the security agencies.

"The political parties are fighting to end political vigilantism but you have a government who keeps politicizing everything and even branding the NDC’s National Chairman as a criminal...

"Until the NPP stops the politicization of National issues, we will also continue to politicize everything," he added.

Hoot at politicians who politicize crime

However, barely a day after his shocking comments, a former Deputy General Secretary of the NDC, Koku Anyidoho, openly condemned both parties for seeking to make political capital out of the arrest of some suspected kidnappers.

Mr Anyidoho reportedly said: "let us hoot at politicians who politicize crime, lets cast them out like demons, it’s a disgrace for politicians to be politicizing crime, I feel like throwing up. NPP, NDC disgracefully politicizing the kidnapping of the Canadian women in Kumasi, both of them are saying Seidu Mba wore their opponent’s t-shirt, and so what?".

Should NDC politicize Church and farming?

But contributing to a panel discussion on Thursday's edition of 'Kokrokoo', on Peace FM, Fred Agbenyo backed his General Secretary insisting that all those calling for the depoliticization of crime do not know what they talking about. He cheekily wondered if Ghanaians would rather the NDC politicized church activities and farming.

"It is Akufo-Addo’s duty to put policies in place to keep us safe; to improve on our security. Then I hear people saying we should not politicize this, should we go and talk about it in the chapel or at the farm? We need to talk to the President for him to wake up…I disagree with all those saying we should not politicize crime" he indicated.
