Show more favorable disposition towards blood donation

Ghanaians have been reminded to show more favorable disposition towards blood donation as the world marks this year’s blood donor day.

This was contained in a press release signed by Dr. Shirley Owusu Ofori, Head of the Transfusion Medicine Unit of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi.

It said as peoples across the world join together to celebrate the day, it is important for all to choose to donate blood without getting paid as it is a gesture of human solidarity they could make to save lives.

The release invited everybody to come on board to promote an aggressive blood donation campaign saying June 14, every year, is observed as blood donor day to create awareness about safe blood and blood products and to recognize voluntary unpaid donors for their life-saving gift.

This year’s event was on the theme “Be a hero, give blood.”

The release said there were plans to promote and support the establishment of effective national blood donor programs and to end the dependency on the family, replacement and paid blood donation.

It encouraged “young people, who are at low risk of transmitting infection through blood donation, to adopt the Club 25 approach by pledging to give blood by 25 years.”

It praised donors who have been donating blood over the years and urged them on.**
