* to step down as Amoako Tuffour dumps him for Sir John*
In what has become a very fierce contest in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) as they gear up for the party's National General Conference in a fortnight, the position of the General Secretary has taken a rather much heated race between the party's incumbent General Secretary, Lawyer Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie a.k.a Sir John who is seeking a re-election and the arrogant Kwabena Agyepong, former spokesperson of President J A Kufuor.
As characteristic of most political contest, the run-up to the election is expected to be fueled with some last minute compromises especially when the battle lines have been drawn between the two top most contestants. In exactly seven days from now to the election, one of such negotiations have been the recent rumored concession by the third force in the race, Lawyer Buaben Asamoa to throw his weight behind Sir John when he granted an interview to a Kumasi-based radio station complaining of some machinations by some bigwigs in the party.
Though Mr. Buaben's campaign seems to be denying this bow out, sources close to Mr. Buaben who is currently in the Northern Region with his boss where a meeting has been sanctioned to conclude on this concession.
Sir John who seems to be slightly ahead of the contest has welcomed the yet-to-be made public endorsement by Mr. Yaw Buaben Asamoa is focused with his campaign and assuring the party folks of his ever-readiness to correct any mistakes and ensure victory for the party in 2016. Elated Sir John congratulated Yaw Buaben and in his usual humorous way said "Yaw is my younger brother I have so much respect for...I admire his humility and decision".
In a related story, Dr. Amoako Tuffour who had earlier endorsed Mr. Buaben Asamoa about two weeks ago during an interview with Accra-based Adom FM has reconsidered his earlier stance and has publicly endorsed the fire brand Sir John for the position of General Secretary. It would be recalled that in an interview with Captain Smart, host of Adom FMs morning show, on Tuesday March 25, 2014, Dr. Amoako-Tuffour though endorsed Yaw Buaben hinted that he would in the coming days (closer to the election) would make his independent-survey-informed stance of his choice for the General Secretary.
Dr. Amoako-Tuffour endorsed Sir John during a political morning show programme on Eagle FM in Cape Coast on Saturday April 5, 2014
