Six teenagers charged with stealing 33 million cedis

Asamankese (E/R), Sept. 17, GNA - Six teenagers at Asamankese have appeared before the Asamankese Circuit Court charged with stealing 33 million cedis and assorted cigarettes valued at 380,400 cedis. They all pleaded guilty to three counts of conspiracy, unlawful entry and stealing and were remanded 0at the Borstal Institute, Maamobi, Accra, to re-appear on September 21.

The boys are aged between 15 and 17 years.

Prosecuting, Police Chief Inspector Joseph Idan told the court presided over by Mr Kofi Akrowiah that a cigarette distributor, Marc Kwaku Oduro, on September 8 closed the door to his store with pad locks after the close of work and left for home.

He said at about 0600 hours the following day he went to the store and realised that thieves had broken into it and stole an amount of 33 million cedis he had kept in a drawer and a quantity of assorted cigarettes valued at 389,400 cedis.

Chief Inspector Idan said whilst Police were investigating the case, information reached them that the accused persons were responsible for the crime and that they had taken refuge at a hotel in Asamankese after a shopping spree in Accra.

The accused persons were arrested in their various rooms at the hotel and an amount of 15 million cedis four mobile phones were retrieved from them when their bags were searched. They had purchased the items in Accra during a shopping spree after the theft.
