Staff at the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) are facing heavy criticism from Ghanaians on social media, with many describing the service at the facility as terrible and the treatment of patients as poor.
In a campaign led by media personality Bridget Otoo on X (formerly Twitter) on December 28, 2024, she expressed her dissatisfaction with the poor services provided by the staff, accusing them of tarnishing the UGMC's reputation.
The center, known for its state-of-the-art facilities since its construction, has now come under fire for alleged unprofessional conduct.
Bridget Otoo, known for her outspoken personality, shared her experience, alleging that staff prioritise financial considerations over the well-being of patients.
She warned that such attitudes could have dire consequences, potentially leading to the collapse of the facility.
“The staff at @ugmedicalcentre will collapse the place before anything else. Nice infrastructure, horrible service. They don’t care about their patients, only their patients' money. I hope they do something about the place before they sink it! When your family member is sick, their well-being remains paramount! I won’t even remember the nurse's face, but I won’t forget what she said. Fortunately, other family members were present to witness the nonsense,” she posted.
Her comments have since garnered widespread attention, prompting several Ghanaians to share similar experiences of poor service from the UGMC staff.
One individual recounted a horrifying experience where nurses allegedly administered a drug she was allergic to.
When the drug began affecting her, causing her muscles and neck to twist, the nurses reportedly had no idea how to stabilise her condition.
She however credited a passing doctor with saving her life during her time at the facility.
“The nurses almost killed me! They gave me a drug I was allergic to. Bro, my muscles and neck started twisting. They didn’t have anything to stabilize me. Fortunately, a good doctor was passing by and helped me. He even blasted them. The nurses, 0/10,” she shared.
Another user criticised the troubling work culture at the facility, accusing staff of failing to prioritise patients’ needs.
He alleged that staff members leisurely walk around while patients have to scream for attention before receiving care.
“I’m so happy this has come up. Staff just walk about leisurely, and nothing gets done on time. Patients have to scream at the top of their voices and call out staff before things get done. And it applies to doctors, nurses, lab staff, etc. That’s their work culture. It’s horrible!,” he shared.
The rising volume of complaints has intensified calls for the authorities to address these concerns and take immediate action to improve services at the UGMC before its reputation suffers further damage.

Lmao Mom had done a surgery and was in the icu with tubes in the mouth and all. I went there at 7:30 to visit and I practically saw her waving her hands up calling for assistance and the whole time those fools were there gathered and conversing, laughing at a video. https://t.co/2TGPm9musB

I was so sick I could barely walk and I begged to be admitted so that I won’t have to sit up and wait several hours waiting for lab results. They said no that I wasn’t sick enough to lie down. https://t.co/jJBr7TgvyA
