There have been mixed reactions from Ghanaians following news of Asamoah Gyan denouncing his association with the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Many of the responses to the announcement on social media, particularly X, implied that the former footballer has taken this stand to protect his reputation and businesses.
Some also expressed concern over what might have informed his decision while a few others inferred that Gyan's disassociation depicts how badly things are managed in the party.
The Black Stars' all-time top scorer announced his departure from the New Patriotic Party and consequently, the Bawumia campaign team, stating that he is no longer affiliated with any political party.
In a statement issued via his social media handles on Wednesday, September 11, 2024, Asamoah Gyan disclosed that henceforth he will be acting as a former footballer and philanthropist.
While Gyan did not disclose the reason for this move, he promised to remain committed to the advancement of the Ghanaian youth and continue to undertake initiatives that would develop the youth.
“I haven’t been fair to the youth and the people of Ghana. Henceforth, I am not affiliated with any political party. I will continue with my humanitarian work and help the youth of Ghana in my own small way. Nothing political. I wish all the political parties a peaceful election on the 7th of December. God bless our homeland Ghana. Thank you,” the caption of the statement reads.
Read some reactions below:
The center cannot hold in the NPP. When defeat looms large, everything becomes nonsense and meaningless. Asamoah Gyan is the latest to denounce and reject the NPP. He simply dropped Timothy Dr Bawumia. 😂

Congratulations in advance to John Mahama, the President of Ghana🎉💐👏 pic.twitter.com/cyHiPoqlSL
Did you and your team write this under duress? Cos I don't get it.

Your statement is unnecessary.
Your affiliation to a political party cannot and shouldn't deter you from philanthropic gestures. What do you mean by you haven't been fair...🤔🤔
Explain.
Asamoah Gyan has jumped off the sinking Elephant Ship.

This is a good decision and i hope you mean your words when you say you're not affiliated to any political party because we later don't want to see that it is a strategy to lure some youths for your party.

You shouldn't have joined any party openly at all but anyways.
Good one. I’ve been saying that celebrities should not be involved in politics. This American style politics we’ve copied divides.

Except you’re full ready to be affiliated with that party.
For those who make music, the authority should find a way for them to earn royalties
All the best champ. The best move is not to be associated with any political party. That terrain is too volatile and hostile at the same time. Stay neutral because football is neutral. 🙌🙌

What happened bro?

It's not wrong to be an NPP as we all know you to be.
Just let honesty and love of Ghana lead you.
But I wish you well.

This is the doing of Bawumia but it’s good you learnt some lessons.

I’m very sure something didn’t go in your favor. A typical Ghanaian 😂
— SUPRA~888 (@king_supra1) September 11, 2024
It’s alright to be affiliated to a political party, you are a Ghanaian and have that right.
— lukmannn (@lukman2330) September 11, 2024
What is not right is supporting and defending their wrongful acts. Being affiliated to a political party doesn’t mean you can’t be philanthropic.
All the best on your decision 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽 pic.twitter.com/XzyEk0joJj
So nobody wants to associate with Npp again oooh🤣🤣🤣
