Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin says some Members of Parliament have been participating in illegal mining activities causing destruction of the country’s forests and water bodies.

Addressing the House at a recall triggered by the Majority, the Speaker noted that galamsey activities remained a “disgrace” to the country.

He urged Members of Parliament to reject contributions from individuals involved in the degrading act.

“Who are those participating in the galamsey? If we take a census, some of you will be there. And the people you’re talking to are aware. It’s not that they are not aware; they are aware that some of you are participating in it.

So please, first, desist from doing it yourselves, and don’t go to them for money for your campaigns. Don’t go to solicit their votes. Let them see your work. Truly, it’s a disgrace that we’ve got this far,” Speaker Bagbin told members of the House.

His admonishment follows an announcement by Ghana Water Limited (GWL) that water distribution in certain areas in the Central Region was being affected due to the prevailing galamsey activities.

The national effort to tackle galamsey has left so much to be desired following various interventions by the government.
