Some NPP executives sponsored NDC members to unseat NPP MPs – Appiah-Kubi alleges

The former Member of Parliament for Asante Akim North, Andy Kwame Appiah-Kubi, has alleged that some executives of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) empowered members of their opponents, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), to unseat certain NPP MPs during the 2024 elections.

Speaking on Okay FM on Thursday, March 27, 2025, the former lawmaker stated that internal wrangling within the party during their time in government became so severe that certain ministers financially supported the opponents of several NPP MPs who were seeking re-election in their constituencies.

He attributed these incidents to a lack of discipline within the party, blaming the leadership for failing to address the issues and prevent them from escalating.

“There was indiscipline in our government and the leaders couldn’t speak against some of the indiscipline that were ongoing. I can say through authority that some party executives empowered some people to unseat existing MPs.

“The worst-case scenario is that some government ministers went to the extent of sponsoring some NDC members to unseat NPP MPs. I’m telling you it happened. They even promoted an independent candidate to unseat an NPP member,” he said.

Appiah-Kubi, who was unseated by his opponent in the 2024 general elections, cited such instances to support his claim.

According to him, he had complained to the former Director-General of the National Communications Authority, Joe Anokye, that his opponent was leveraging on the media to tarnish his image during the electioneering period.

He said he sought Anokye's help to stop his opponent from doing so, considering the office Anokye was managing. However, he was shocked when Anokye declined to assist him.

“In my case I complained about the use of airwaves against me. My opponent was using the media to destroy, create panic and tell untruths about me and I told Joe Anokye about it. He plainly told me he couldn’t help me because he had been instructed to execute his work in a certain way and so I should complain to the media commission. My own brother couldn’t help me but helped someone else. We were at the Kotoka International Airport when I made the complaint but he didn’t do anything to help me but I’m not complaining,” he lamented.

The seasoned politician called on the party to learn from some of their actions and mistakes, which he believes contributed to their defeat, in order to prevent issues like indiscipline from recurring.

He also advocated for unity among the members and urged them to avoid acts that create divisions within the party.

“… I am not interested in speaking against people to disgrace them but the important thing is the lesson we can draw out. Going forward, as a party we must see ourselves as brother’s keepers and not connive with opponents to work against our own members.”
