Something is holding us together, but it is not us – Kofi Bentil

Vice President of IMANI Africa, Kofi Bentil, has sounded a strong caution to Ghanaians on what he described as the fragile state of Ghana’s democracy.

According to him, Ghanaians pretend as if they are so peaceful and that all is well with our democracy, but this is far from the truth because there are serious issues that must be addressed.

He indicated that some African countries have gone to war over issues that are far less than what has been happening in Ghana.

“Something is keeping this country together; it is not us. Whoever you believe in, thank him. Because, our actions do not merit the kind of peace we have. The things we do and do not do and the failures of our leaders at every level do not merit the kind of peace we have.

“People did less and suffered more. Rwanda didn’t have the kind of problem that we have. They just made a few mistakes, and that was it. The things that started the war in Sierra Leone and Liberia, we have seen them here in multiples, yet we didn’t have problems.

He added, “So we need to appreciate the greatness of our luck and make sure it does not run out.”

Kofi Bentil further asserted that Ghana looks like a perfect democracy in the eyes of the world, but inside there are serious issues that need to be fixed.

“We have this democracy brand, which is hailed around the world, but those of us who live in it know that the brand is brighter than the product. And so, we need to be clear about the fact that our democracy is far from perfect or safe.”
