The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, is scheduled to hold an engagement with the media on Wednesday, November 6, 2024.

According to a statement by the Public Affairs Sub-Division of Parliament issued on Tuesday, the Speaker’s address will focus on recent developments in the lawmaking house and other issues concerning Ghana’s democratic growth.

“The Speaker of Ghana's Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, will address the media on recent developments within Parliament and broader issues concerning democratic development in Ghana. This engagement aims to provide an opportunity for the media to discuss critical issues affecting Ghana's parliamentary democracy, including recent events that have led to significant political developments.

The address will take place on Wednesday, November 6, 2024, at 2:00 pm, at the Justice D.F. Annan Auditorium, Job 600, Parliament House,” the statement said.

The Parliament of Ghana has been plunged into controversy following the declaration of four seats vacant by the Speaker on October 18, 2024.

According to the Speaker, the affected MPs, in line with Article 97 (g) and (h), vacated their seats by their decision to contest in the upcoming December 7 elections on a ticket other than what they currently represent in Parliament.

The Supreme Court, however, suspended the Speaker’s ruling following a suit and an application for an interlocutory injunction by the New Patriotic Party Caucus Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin.

Following the court’s ruling, the Speaker suspended Parliament indefinitely but has since recalled the House for a sitting on November 7, 2024, in accordance with Article 112 (3) and Orders 5 and 53 of the Standing Orders of Parliament.
