A youth group of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), calling itself ‘NDC Diehards’ is mounting pressure on Dr. Ekwow Spio-Garbrah to withdraw a statement he made that the NDC needs a new face other than former President Mahama for the 2020 presidential elections.
The group has also attacked the former Trades and Industry Minister for declaring his intention to contest the NDC 2020 flagbearership.
According to the group, it is too early for ‘ungrateful’ Spio-Garbrah to declare his intentions and to make such pronouncements against the former President.
Dr. Spio-Garbrah, during a meeting with some NDC members at Asawase in the Ashanti Region, stated that the NDC needs a new face for 2020. He reiterated that the 2020 presidential election would be a tough one; for which reason the NDC needs a more competent and credible leader.
Dr. Spio-Garbrah went on to tip himself as the ideal candidate for the party, thus discrediting former President John Dramani Mahama. However, the NDC Diehards group disagrees with him, stated a mynews.com report. A spokesperson for the group, Joe Kwei, says John Mahama is still the effective leader the NDC can have for 2020.
He said this in a three-paragraphed statement headlined “NDC and Ghana at large is lamenting for the comeback of JDM in 2020 Not a new a face.”
“I have read a submission made by Dr Ekow Spio-Gabrah that NDC needs a new face for 2020 polls to prove that NDC has the men. …On the contrary, the writings on the walls says the opposite that, John Dramani Mahama must come back,” Joe Kwei rebutted.
According to him, the majority in the NDC and Ghanaians at large are expecting the return of the former President in 2020.
Therefore, Spio-Garbah should withdraw his comments that the NDC needs a new face for the 2020 polls.
