A full state burial service for Major Maxwell Adam Mahama who was murdered gruesomely a week ago by some residents of Denkyira Obuasi in the Central Region is ongoing at the Forecourt of State House in Accra as directed by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
Major Mahama’s remains would be laid to rest at the Osu Military Cemetary after the burial service, followed by the final funeral rites at the Forecourt of the State House.
A vigil was held on Thursday, June 8, 2017 at Arakan Officers Mess and saw family of the late officer, top military and government officials, friends and sympathizers of the bereaved family in attendance.
Captain Mahama, who was on Monday posthumously promoted to a Major upon the recommendation of Major General Obed Boamah Akwa, Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), commanded a detachment of army troops assigned to the Upper West Denkyira District to clamp down on illegal mining.
Reports suggest that the officer had gone on his early morning physical training in civilian clothing, jogging through the Diaso Township, when he was lynched and partly burnt by some youth of Denkyria-Obuasi who claimed they thought he was an armed robber.
President Akufo-Addo has announced plans to erect a monument in his honour as well as the setting up a GHC 500,000 Trust Fund to cater for the education of the late military officer’s children.
