Statement: Minority Leader to deliver 3rd Liberty Lecture

The Danquah Institute will on Tuesday, November 12, 2013 hold its 3rd edition of its flagship event, the Liberty Lecture, with the Minority Leader in Parliament, Hon. Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu delivering a paper on the theme “The Deficit in Parliamentary Scrutiny in the Fight Against Corruption”.

The lecture takes place at the Auditorium of the British Council at 5:00pm.

The norm in recent years has been that Parliament, generally speaking, does as the Executive determines. It is simply a case of who has the numbers and the application of party discipline.

Unless Parliament takes action to address the matter, this trend of Executive domination will continue. Notwithstanding the fact that this situation will not readily be changed in the immediate future, there are, nonetheless, some avenues available to enhance the ability of Parliament to be more effective in discharging its constitutional responsibilities.

Hon. Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu in his lecture will make proposals on how Parliament can serve as an effective check on the Executive, especially in dealing with corruption.

The General Public is cordially invited to this event.
