The rising trend of youth unemployment in the country is forcing individuals in the country, particularly the youth, to think outside the box and explore innovative and unconventional means to survive.

A study by the Ghana Statistical Service indicated that almost two million youth are not in education, employment, or training (NEET), which has fallen by almost half a million as of the third quarter of last year.

For 24-year-old senior high school graduate Stephen Baafi Acheampong, his dream of becoming a professional footballer was cut short after suffering a shoulder injury in 2017.

With his hopes of becoming a football player dashed, he decided to explore other paths. He told myjoyonline.com in a recent interview that he has found and embraced a new path, as he now survives on washing shoes in Bantama, in the Ashanti Region.

The shoe-washing business has been his daily source of income since graduating from senior high school.

“I used to help someone sell sneakers. When the market became slow, I decided to focus on shoe washing as a business," he stated.

In addition to his shoe-washing business, Stephen also sells pre-owned sneakers and crocs.

“Someone has asked me to wash this for him. It’s really dirty, but I will make it white.

There was a lady who told me she was inspired by what I do and would love for me to help her establish one in Accra,” he said.

He also takes to social media to seek to promote his services and inspire others.

Stephen says he remains committed to his craft, despite some demeaning comments from the public.

“Some girls were teasing me initially. But I am not perturbed. I know what I want to achieve. I plan on expanding the business,” Stephen said.

Stephen is hopeful of a better future in his business and stated that he would continue to inspire the youth to make the most of what they have.
