The National Women’s Organiser of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has condemned what she termed “undemocratic tendencies” of the Kufour administration and its attempts to silence its political opponents.
She said the administration has failed to deliver on its campaign promises to Ghanaians and is desperately engaged in diversionary tactics by attacking its opponents. According to her, Ghanaians are now wide awake and aware of the inability of the administration to inability of the administration to meet their expectations and will definitely vote it out of power. Ms Asiam said this in an address to inaugurate the Central Region Women’s Wing Working Committee in Cape Coast. She said, “Ghanaians were subjected to a barrage of propaganda attacks on the NDC’s policies in the year 2000, with sweet promises such as the abolition of cash-and-carry the golden age of business and a perfect economy.”
Ms Asiam said the failure of the NPP to deliver on these promises has resulted in a poor economy, a static educational system and increased unemployment, which have left Ghanaians worse off. She said the desperation in the NPP administration could be well explained by the harassment of its political opponents. Ms Asiam noted that the working committees of the NDC have been designed to work towards promoting party goals and objectives and urged all party members to work hard to enable them to wrest power from the NPP in the 2004 elections. Ms Asiam also appealed to the Reconciliation Commission to ensure that nothing is done to further polarize the country.
The Central Regional Chairman of the party, Dr Ato Quarshie noted that the party is well prepared to recapture power in the 2004 elections and urged the women to use their influence in society to attract people into the party. He also advised the members to unite and bury their differences to enable them to achieve their set goals.
The Member of Parliament (MP) for Gomoa West, Ms Ama Benyiwa Doe, said the NDC has issues of women at heart and said the women’s wing of the party is ready to help the party to recapture power in the 2004 elections. Ms Doe said the NPP, with its unworkable policies, has shown that it is not ready for power and urged all to keep rallying behind the NDC in its bid to recapture political power.
