The immediate-past General Secretary of the Christian Council of Ghana, Rev Dr Kwabena Opuni-Frimpong has condemned the public predictions of the death of political and religious leaders in Ghana by certain people, especially some pastors, in the name of prophecies.
His comments come in the wake of the 31st December doomsday prophecies made by the Founder of the Glorious Word and Power Ministry International, Rev Isaac Owusu Bempah.
According to the pastor, the Chief Imam, Sheikh Nuhu Sharabutu, may die this year.
Apart from the Chief Imam, Rev Owusu Bempah also prophesied that Vice-President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, as well as former presidents John Kufuor and John Mahama, may also die.
Responding to the development, Rev Dr Opuni-Frimpong, who is also a lecturer at the Department of Religious Studies at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), said: “I have not heard churches/pastors from South Korea, France, Germany, UK, Canada, U.S.A., etc., frequently predicting or discussing the death of their leaders, be it in the political, religious, traditional, or entertainment [front] etc. in public, in the name of prophecy.
“The annual pronouncements of the death of national leaders has not been beneficial. We must protect the healthy relationship between the church and public officials including church and Muslim relationships”.
He, therefore, urged the media to blacklist such pastors and avoid publications based on such prophecies.
“Maybe, this is the time the media must stop providing Oxygen to the death predictions for public decency and maturity of religious practices to thrive,” he emphasised.
He said: “Moreover, ministers of the gospel, who understand the prophetic gifts and ministry must intensify Christian education on the subject, both among their congregations and on other media platforms.
“Christian mutuality and best practices in matters of faith cannot be compromised. The Church in Ghana must be of better example to others on the African continent. ‘Tell the righteous it shall be well with them’. Isaiah 3:10”.
