Stop early campaign – NPP warns

The Greater Accra Executives of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has cautioned ‘wanna be’ parliamentary aspirants in the region to cease campaigning till further notice.

A statement signed by Greater Accra Regional Chairman, Ishmael Ashitey cautioned that “we wish to bring to the attention of all party members especially people who have the ambition to contest parliamentary primaries in constituencies where we have seating Members of Parliament (MPs) to cease.”

The party, according to the Regional Chairman, was yet to set a time table for parliamentary primaries; hence members who have noble ambition must not pick up forms too early.

He explained that the party wants their current MPs to concentrate and promote the interest of the party and Ghana without any divided attention.

“In addition, constituency executives must be given the free hand to rebuild the party for the 2016 general election.”

Mr Ashitey cautioned that “recalcitrant” members would be dealt with by the party disciplinary committee.

Not too long ago, National Chairman, Paul Awentimi Afoko, had cause to issue a similar caveat, barring potential flagbearer aspirants of the NPP to desist from further campaigns.

He said the manner in which some of the prospective candidates and their supporters had started pushing their agenda could negatively affect the party.

He, therefore, appealed to those with any such intentions to contest for the position and their supporters to stop what he described as “the unnecessary media circus and rally behind the new leadership to reconcile and bring unity to the party.”
