A member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) communications team, Ellen Ama Daaku, has urged the government to stop making excuses and ensure Ghanaians have uninterrupted power supply.

Speaking on UTV on Thursday, January 9, 2025, she addressed concerns raised by John Jinapor, the Member of Parliament for Yapei-Kusawgu, and Minister of Energy-designate, who warned that Ghana has only five hours of fuel stock left to sustain power generation.

"Why didn’t John Jinapor pressure Herbert Krapa to do the needful if the claims are true? Why should the NDC blame the NPP for dumsor? When we handed over power, the lights were on," she stated.

Ellen Daaku questioned the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for not addressing the issue during the transition period.

"What were they doing on the Transition Team? They now claim to have ordered fuel from Nigeria. When we were leaving office, the lights were on. They should stop giving excuses and keep the lights on. Why are we now hearing about an energy crisis after the transition?

"The NDC has now set up an emergency team and ordered fuel from Nigeria. When the NPP handed over, the lights were on. What happened between then and now?" she said.

Ellen Ama Daaku also criticised what she described as fearmongering by John Jinapor.

"Why is he causing fear and panic, accusing former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo of leaving office without securing fuel? We handed over a functioning system, and the NDC had all the tools to ensure continuity. They should take responsibility instead of blaming the NPP," she added.

She called on the NDC to prioritise solutions.

"Ghanaians deserve solutions, not excuses. The NDC should prioritise securing adequate fuel supplies and stabilizing the energy sector rather than shifting blame," she said.

John Abdulai Jinapor, the Minister of Energy-designate, has warned of an imminent energy crisis, citing insufficient fuel stock for power generation.

"I have bad news for you. As of today, the confirmation we are receiving is that we have only five hours' worth of fuel left," he said.

Jinapor added that the country’s fuel supply for power generation would not last beyond two days.

"If you look at the heavy fuel oil and diesel fuel, we don't have enough to last two days. So, in two days' time, we are likely to run out of fuel," he explained.

He further accused the outgoing Nana-Addo-led government of failing to make necessary fuel procurements despite repeated warnings.

"This administration has not placed any fuel orders as we speak," he concluded.
