Okyenhene Osagyefuo Amoatia Ofori Panin has expressed dissatisfaction with the mismanagement of the country’s natural resources.
He called on President John Mahama to ensure the proper exploitation of the country’s natural resources to benefit all Ghanaians.
The Okyenhene noted that “we have gold, bauxite, manganese, timber, cocoa, and even oil, but I am worried about how the natural resources are being mismanaged and only a group of people are enjoying while the rest of Ghanaians are suffering.”
“In the coming years, Ghanaians would have no story to tell our children, because we have no legacy left due to the mismanagement today, we must take control of our resources to build our country, Okyenhene noted.
The Okyenhene disclosed this while addressing chiefs and citizens of Akyem Abuakwa on Saturday at Bunso Cocoa College in the East Akim Municipality of the Eastern Region during the Okyeman Congress 2014, which climaxed his 15th anniversary.
It was under the theme, ‘Assisting the Traditional Council in Promoting Sustainable Development In Okyeman.’
According to the President of the Eastern Regional House of Chiefs, “Due to arrogance on the part of public officers, the toil of those who fought to build this country has gone waste and a group of people are enjoying while others are suffering and engulfed in poverty.
Our leaders lack the vision to drive the development of our country, he said, challenging the central government to establish the decentralization system to enable the ordinary citizens to execute projects independently.
He further tasked all Ghanaians to sacrifice their lives to build a better future for unborn generation.
Osagyefuo Amoatia Ofori Panin expressed worry about the poor road network in Okyeman and tasked all the citizens of Akyem to champion a common agenda since successive governments have done nothing for them despite numerous appeals to various presidents.
He bemoaned indiscipline in the country, especially among the youth.
The Okyenhene further advised his sub-chiefs to promote the development of the people and avoid extravagant lifestyle.
The event was graced by other sub-chiefs of the Okyeman Traditional Council, prominent leaders and academicians and politicians such as Nana Akomea, former MP, Amoako Atta Twum, MP for Atiwa West who chaired the event.
