Apam (C/R), July 23, GNA - Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies have been urged to desist from writing "HIPC Benefit" on projects executed with funds from initiative.
Mr Emmanuel O. Darko, General Manager of Credit Union Association (CUA), made the suggestion at a meeting of the Apam Workers' Credit Union, at Apam.
Mr Darko stated that since the government indicated that it was compelled by circumstances beyond its control to join the HIPC initiative the inscription on projects would create the impression that Ghanaians were proud of joining the initiative. "It would no longer mean an unpleasant but necessary decision taken by the government to reduce pressure on the economy and also to give the government some breathing space when it took over administration of the country", the CUA Manager stated.
"We do not inscribe the benefit of other funding facilities on projects financed with funds from their sources," he added. He appealed to the poor to use micro-financing facilities offered by Credit Unions, the Banks and government agencies profitably to come out of their predicament.
He also advised them to invest in the education of their children since education was the best means of breaking the poverty circle.
