The Managing Editor of the Insight newspaper, Kwesi Pratt Jnr, has charged political leaders to reduce the use of long convoys during campaigns.

Lamenting over the opulent lifestyle exhibited by some political elements and parties, Kwesi Pratt described as senseless the decision by politicians and lawmakers to abandon their work and instead join the campaign trail of flagbearers.

He made this known while addressing a congregation during the Atta Mills Memorial Lecture on July 19 at the Cedi Conference Centre of the University of Ghana.

According to him, decent politicians who want to make a positive difference in the country would not behave in a manner that puts a toll on the state coffers.

“I look back to that day and I see today and sometimes I truly feel sad. The president of the republic, official function 3 car convoy small cars. Today, look at the campaign convoys, are you not embarrassed by these campaign convoys? Decent people in our society who belong to political parties who want to make a difference should start by reducing these senseless, useless convoys which only paint the picture of useless opulence.

“And then sometimes when you ask why is this happening, so everybody wants to join the convoy, they come with their own convoy and so what? You want to join the convoy, is that the most important thing? Go to your constituency and work and leave the flagbearer alone to do his work. Don’t embarrass the party and embarrass the flagbearer on top. This useless long convoys must come to an end now,” Kwesi Pratt urged.
