Former New Patriotic Party (NPP) member, Hopeson Adorye, has taken subtle jabs at President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
Adorye stressed that having elected four presidents with the name John since 1992 – Jerry John, John Kufuor, John Mills and John Mahama - it was a mistake to ditch a John and vote for a William in the 2016 election.
“Our first Fourth Republican president was Jerry John Rawlings, after him was John Agyekum Kufuor, the third was called John Evans Atta Mills and the fourth was John Mahama.
“When it was time to elect our fifth president, stubborn as Ghanaians are, we abandoned a John and elected William; traders, have you seen our end?” he is heard saying during a campaign event by John Alan Kyerematen, leader of the Movement for Change (M4C).
Akufo-Addo defeated Alan in the NPP primaries before beating then sitting President John Dramani Mahama, who was seeking re-election in 2016. Akufo-Addo has since secured his final term after defeating Mahama again in 2020.
Alan, a former appointee of Akufo-Addo, is set to contest for president in upcoming polls, along with John Mahama and VP Mahamudu Bawumia, the latter is contesting to succeed Akufo-Addo as president.
