Students end health programme in Amenfi East

Wassa-Akropong (W/R), July 12, GNA - Some final year pharmacy students from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi, have ended a tour of the Wassa Amenfi District where they carried out research on some health issues.

The weeklong programme involved the causes of communicable diseases, the use and application of drugs prescribed by health personnel and observation of the environment as well as personal hygiene among the people.

Mr Selorm Mensah Yevu, leader of the group, told the Ghana News Agency on Monday that major factors that militate against the prevention of diseases prevalent in the area include poverty, illiteracy and lack of information on health issues. During the exercise, he said, it came out that many people were reluctant to seek medical attention due to the high cost of drugs. Those who attend hospital either misuse or misapply drugs to compound their problems, Mr Yevu said. The group observed that self-medication was very common among the people.

Mr Yevu said the findings of the group would be made available to health and political authorities to help find solutions to some of the problems among the people.
