The Student Representative Council (SRC) of the School of Medicine and Health Sciences (SMHS) of the University for Development Studies (UDS), has expressed appreciation to government for granting scholarships to their students. According to the UDS SRC, government has demonstrated its commitment under the Better Ghana Agenda programme by giving true meaning to the promotion of science education through the gesture of encouraging more Ghanaians to pursue science and mathematics. The Mathematics, Science and Technology Scholarship Scheme (MASTESS) programme was set up by government through the Ministry of Environment, Science and Technology in partnership with the Ministry of Education, the Scholarship Secretariat and the GET-fund, to identify brilliant and willing students studying pure and applied Mathematics, Science and Technology in second cycle schools, vocational, technical and tertiary institutions in Ghana. It would be recalled that H.E. Prof. J.E.A. Mills in his State of the Nation Address to Parliament reiterated his commitment to build a better Ghana through science and technology. The SRC president, Fred K Amese expressed the appreciation of the students in an interview with the Daily Democrat. Over 5,000 students have so far benefitted from the scheme and an estimated 1,500 students will also benefit during the 2011- 2012 academic year.
