Jukwa-New -Town (Central Region), 8 Dec. '98 - The chairman of Jukwa New Town branch of the Ghana Psychic and Traditional Healers Association (GPTHA), Opanyin Kofi Ayigbeh, popularly known as Opanyin Fakyem, has called on the youth to pay serious attention to the study of traditional medicine. He said this will enable them to take over from the ageing herbalists to ensure the continuation of herbal practice in the country. Addressing a meeting of the association at Jukwa New Town near Agona Swedru, he said with the advancement of technology, the youth can research more into herbal and plant medicine to improve the practice. This would also enable the government to make some savings on the importation of drugs. Opanyin Ayigbeh said even though traditional healers are playing a vital role in the health delivery system, there is still room for improvement to make their services accessible to the majority of the people . He called on registered herbalists to pay their taxes promptly and to expose the quacks among them to maintain the good image of the practice .
