Summon US Ambassador over "flippant" Mahama tweet - Ras Mubarak

The Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Youth Authority has called on the Foreign Affairs Minister, Hannah Tetteh, to immediately summon the US Ambassador to Ghana to be queried over a “rude and disrespectful” tweet at President Mahama.

President Mahama on Thursday July 17, wrote on his twitter page that "as a people, we have had to make sacrifices. I wish to assure you that the results of these sacrifices would begin to show very soon."

However, in an apparent response by the official twitter account of the US Embassy in Ghana, the Embassy retweeted “@JDMahama and what sacrifices are you making? Don’t tell me that pay cut."

However, Ras Mubarak, in an interview on Asempa FM on Friday, described the response by the US Embassy as a diplomatic blunder, adding that the USA must apologise for such a cheeky response.

According to him, the Foreign Affairs Minister must immediately summon the US Ambassador to find out if the tweet emanated from the Embassy, and what necessitated that response.

He added that the US must also apologise to the President and the people of Ghana for taking a dig at the President of the nation.

Ras Mubarak said “the Minister of Foreign Affairs should summon the US Ambassador in Accra to explain and apologize for what could be described as a major diplomatic blunder. To have the official US Embassy Twitter account respond to a tweet by our President in such saucy term is shameful."

However, Investigations by Ghananewsportal.com have revealed that the tweet was from the official twitter account of the US Embassy and was removed few minutes after it was posted.

The US Embassy later apologised tweeting “our staff mixed a personal handle with the embassy’s. We apologise for the errant tweet."

The Embassy has, however, failed to issue an official apology on the tweet.
