Sunyani Regional Hospital hit by accommodation problem

Dr Jacob Abebrese, Medical Director of Sunyani Regional Hospital has expressed dissatisfaction about the lack of accommodation for the medical staff, which he said is affecting the operations of the health facility.

Speaking to the Ghana News Agency in Sunyani, he said funds meant for the replacement of old equipment, purchase of drugs and maintenance of facilities are being diverted to rent accommodation for staff, thus draining the finances of the hospital.

The medical director said last year alone, the hospital spent GH¢ 200, 000 on accommodation alone for staff although the medical facility needs about GH¢ 600,000 to restore the defective central air-conditioner.

Dr Abebrese said it was “a big mistake”, for the hospital to be built without accommodation facilities.

He said the hospital is in dire need of money to renovate the incinerator, which had developed a lot of cracks and called on government to re-capitalise all regional hospitals.

He said in spite of all the financial difficulties, the hospital is trying its best to maintain its standard of providing quality health services to the public, adding that last year the medical facility attended to 166, 240 cases of various diseases.

Dr Abebrese said during the period under review 13,093 of the cases were admitted out of which 751 died whilst receiving treatment.

The hospital also recorded 35 maternal deaths and 112 infant deaths.

Dr Abebrese urged pregnant women to eat healthy food as healthy mothers often gave birth to healthy babies.

He advised the public not to stay at home whenever they fell sick till their health conditions deteriorate before rushing for treatment.
