Mr. Kwame Awuah Twumasi, Sunyani Municipal Chief Executive, says the assembly spends over ?70million cedis monthly on sanitation in Sunyani alone .
He said as the fight on sanitation becomes tough, other developmental projects are likely to be sidelined for lack of funds because sanitation issues in the municipality may take a greater part of the assembly?s budget.
He made the statement at a workshop to sensitize the staff of the assembly and some assemblymen in the municipality on management of the environment and how best to ensure good sanitation practices, under the auspices of the Regional District of Nanaimo, Canada.
He said the assembly is putting in place adequate measures to educate the public on how best to manage sanitation to ensure clean environment devoid of diseases in the municipality.
The MCE pointed out that, people?s attitude and perceptions on the management of the environment as well as sanitation, could easily be changed if education goes well with them.
He asserted that people?s skills and knowledge must be sharpened through education to be able to handle sanitation issues well without difficulties.
He called on the public to partner the assembly in its crusade to keep the city clean.
Madam Carey McIver, management and environment manager of the Regional District of Nanaimo, Canada, advised the assembly to handle sanitation issues and solid waste prudently, since it could serve as a good source of energy.
She pointed out that the organisation will submit to the assembly an action plan that will assist the assembly ensure proper sanitation.
