The Association of Women in Mining Ghana, is advocating a policy to support vulnerable women in various mining areas across the country.

The association is of the view that such a policy will empower women in such areas.

Speaking in an interview with Class Business, President of the Women in Mining Ghana, Georgette Sakyi-Addo said if government allocates enough resources for women in the mining areas, it will improve their socio-economic development.

She said: “We take cognisant of the fact that there are vulnerable people in some of these mining areas and women in mining will be happy that a policy actually lays out the framework and we don’t leave these decisions to be made by others because we have seen that till now, a lot of women are still at the bottom.

“Economic empowerment is key for everybody, to be economically empowered, would give you the chance to be independent.

“We have political independence in Ghana but economic empowerment is key and so if [there’s a fund] and we’re able to allocate money to the districts, and there are clauses in there that says ‘people who are affected because of diseases, because they are women can be given some funds to do some economic project, that would help them live better lives. I think that a kind of policy like that will be good for us.”
