Suspect hangs in custody

A 31-year-old man has hanged himself in a cell at the Feyiase Police Station in the Bosomtwe District of the Ashanti Region, a few hours after his arrest for allegedly stealing a motorbike.

Kwame Asare was found hanging from overhead burglary proof in the early hours of yesterday during a routine cell visit by police officers manning the cells.

The Station Officer, Inspector Joseph Ankomah, told DAILY GUIDE the suspected thief hanged himself with his pair of boxer shorts between Wednesday night and Thursday morning.

He was alone in the holding cell, and was due for initial court appearance, the officer disclosed.

Inspector Ankomah asserted that the body of the suspect had been deposited at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital for a post-mortem.

The deceased was arrested together with the motorbike on Wednesday at about 4:30 pm at Bomso in Kumasi on charges of stealing by his accusers, and handed over to the police for investigation, the police officer said.

Inspector Ankomah narrated that the suspect was said to have bolted with a Yamaha motorbike he took from the complainant at Esereso community after he had approached the seller and requested that he was going to try it with the view to purchase it.

“No foul play is suspected. A post-mortem will be performed to determine the exact cause of death,” said Inspector Ankomah.
