Suspect remanded for stabbing MP's son at Electoral Commission office

Usman Haruna, who is accused of stabbing Ato Koomson, the son of Awutu Senya East MP Mavis Hawa Koomson, was remanded by the Accra High Court on Thursday, June 6, 2024, into police custody.

The incident took place during a scuffle at the office of the Electoral Commission in Ofaakor, near Kasoa in the Central Region.

Haruna was arrested by the police during the disturbance, which occurred around 5 a.m. on Sunday, June 2, 2024, before the start of the day's activities at the EC office.

An eyewitness reported that the conflict arose from a disagreement about the queueing of voters looking to transfer their votes to the constituency.

"The situation quickly turned violent," the eyewitness said.

During the altercation, Ato Koomson was stabbed in the chest and taken to the 37 Military Hospital in Accra.

Additionally, three members of the NDC were injured and hospitalized at the Kasoa Polyclinic.

Haruna is set to appear in court again on June 19, 2024.
