Suspected armed robber gives false information to Police

Sekondi, March 5, GNA - Information given to the Police by a suspected armed robber arrested on March 2 were false. The suspect is George Kley, aged 47 and not Ben Doku as he told the Police after his arrest.

He also told the Police that he was a native of Dodze but investigations revealed that he hails from Dome in the Volta Region. Mr. Kofi Duku Arthur, Western Regional Police Commander told newsmen at Sekondi over the weekend that the suspect was involved in several crimes at Tema where he had been declared wanted. Kley, who is of medium height and well built, was arrested in Takoradi on Tuesday, for alleged robbery.

He is said to have driven an accomplice in a Toyota saloon car to Cal Merchant Bank, Takoradi, where the accomplice snatched 35 million cedis from the driver of a van belonging to the Twer Nyame Cold Store. The driver was sent by Mr Philip Abissah, owner of the Cold Store to deposit the money at around 1500 hours. According to Mr Abissah the accomplice ran and joined the car with the money and speed away.

He said his driver gave the robbers a hot chase but the car had to slow down at the New Takoradi roundabout because of a traffic jam. Mr Abissah said his driver ran the van into the Toyota saloon, bursting one of the back tyres. He said the accomplice left the money in the car and took to his heels but the driver was arrested and handed over to the Takoradi Central Police. The arrested robber is in Police custody to assist in investigations into the case.
