National Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Sammy Gyamfi has dared Attorney-General Godfred Dame to personally make depositions in opposition to allegations of witness tampering levelled against him.
The allegations were made by Richard Jakpa, an accused person who stated in open court that Dame had sought his support to implicate a co-accused, Cassiel Ato Forson, in the ongoing ambulance purchase trial.
The A-G, opposed an application for mistrial in the case as filed by Jakpa’s lawyers citing a recent leaked tape but Dame's application was done in the name of a Principal State Attorney at the A-G’s office.
This, Sammy Gyamfi insisted was because the A-G was afraid of deposing to the application himself for fear of lying under oath given the contents of the tape.
The tape is not in evidence at this stage of the trial.
“These are matters before the court in several affidavits and you have the right if you think these allegations are not true (to formally oppose them yourself). I heard he told you not long ago that ‘God will speak for him,’ well, he can speak for himself because God helps those who help themselves.
“Very strangely he has not been able to swear to any affidavit to oppose to those material facts against him as a person,” Gyamfi told the media on June 4, 2024, stressing that it took a Principal State Attorney to depose to the A-G's affidavit.
“In any case, why can’t Godfred Dame speak for himself, why can’t he swear an affidavit and oppose the allegations or the evidential averments made against him by the accused persons?” Gyamfi asked.
He said, a plausible reason was that the A-G feared the consequences of swearing under oath and lying hence shifting the issues in order to ensure that someone can deny for him things that he can deny. “That is incredible,” he stressed.
