Swedru District owes ECG 1.6 billion cedis

Agona Swedru, Aug 10, GNA - Customers of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) in the Agona Swedru District of the Central Region owe the company 1.6 billion cedis.

Mr Bismarck Awuku, District Manager of the Company, speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) said the indebtedness was over the past one and half years.

Throwing light on the rehabilitation and extension work being undertaken by the company in the district, he said the Company had taken measures to prosecute the customers to retrieve the money. Mr Awuku expressed concern about illegal interconnection and the continued stealing of electricity meters by some customers to their premises, which was making the Company to lose a huge amount of money. He urged the customers to seek the identity of those who entered their premises to retrieve meters and to hand them over to the Police if they were found not to be workers of the Company.

The District Manager said that the lines from Winneba-Junction to Agona Swedru were to be upgraded from 11 Kilovolts (KV) to 33 to improve supply to the area.

Mr Awuku stated that the Company had installed three 315 Kilovolt Ampere (KVA) transformers at Agona Abodom, Nsaba and Duakwa while two 500 KVA transformers had been mounted at Swedru Pipe Tank and opposite the Swedru Secondary School to improve supply.

He said that low-tension poles had been erected at Agona Nsaba, Duakwa, Abodom, Nyakrom and Swedru to extend electricity to the areas and appealed to the customers to pay their bills promptly to enjoy quality service all the time.
