Several reasons have been attributed to the defeat of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Former President John Mahama, former Ministers, delegates of the party have all received their own share of the blame.

This led to the formation of a fact finding committee led by Professor Kwesi Botchwey to find the actual cause of the defeat.

Submitting the report after the committee completed its work to executives of the party, Prof Botchwey said: “indeed, the loss of ethicality had a lot to do in the party’s defeat in 2016. In the work that I chaired, thanks to the decision of the national executive to involve me in that important exercise, we identified and the party is aware of the incidence of observation of grievances, bitterness, over what many saw as the manipulation and breakdown of integrity in the selection of executives in the various levels of management in the party’s affairs from the branch upwards.”

Sylvester Mensah, a flagbearer aspirant of the NDC, speaking on the same issue in an interview on Friday's edition of Peace FM morning show 'Kokrokoo' said their defeat was 'internal'.

According to him, “our members were dissatisfied, they were not content, they felt we could do more causing inertia and that was why we lost. It was more of an internal defeat than without…and that is what we are working…accessibility is a problem in the party and that is why we need to have one person from the flagstaff house at the constituency level to support government business and offer opportunity to have instant knowledge of what is happening in the constituencies and it is one of the things I will do when elected”.
