A member of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, has asked Ghanaians not to oppose the payment of the TV licence fee.

“We should not be averse to paying TV licence. I think it is an important good and can help GTV serve us and their staff much better,” he posted on Facebook.

Mr Otchere-Darko, however, disagreed with the establishment of special courts to enforce the payment.

In his opinion, GTV should “concentrate more on building the infrastructure that can help them to collect [licence].” “Ask yourselves: when was the last time you received a demand notice at home or in the office over nonpayment of TV licence?” he quizzed.

The reintroduction of the TV licence fee has been met with mixed reactions among the populace. Chief Justice Sophia Akuffo recently granted a request by the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) to establish special courts across the country to deal with persons who fail to pay their TV licence fees beginning Thursday, 4 January 2018.
