The Member of Parliament for Tarkwa-Nsuaem, George Mireku Duker, has lauded the Duker’s Teachers Awards and the inaugural Health Workers Awards for its impact on educational outcomes in the municipality.

According to him, the BECE pass rate has improved from 76% in 2021 to 84% in 2023, while the WASSCE pass rate increased from 69.35% in 2021 to 96.5% in 2023.

These improvements underscore the positive influence of the awards on teacher motivation and student performance.

He said this at the third edition of the awards on Friday, October 25, 2024.

The event, themed "Championing Learning and Wellness in our Communities," celebrated and motivated dedicated teachers, nurses, doctors, and support staff.

During the ceremony, 21 teachers were recognized across various categories, including non-teaching staff, KG, Primary, JHS, SHS/TVET, and headteachers.

Special awards were given for the Best STEM Teacher, Best Teacher for Environmental Advocacy, and the Overall Best Teacher.

Francis Archer of Tarkwa Senior High School received the top honor, driving home a brand-new vehicle worth $14,000.

In the health sector, 16 awards were presented across five categories: Hospital, Support Staff, Health Center/CHPS, Municipal Directorate, and Nursing and Midwifery Training College. Two Lifetime Achievement Awards were also bestowed upon a retired educationist and a health practitioner.

Prizes included motorbikes, refrigerators, chest freezers, TV sets, and cash awards, with all winners receiving citations and plaques.

Duker expressed his gratitude to the independent award selection committees and all supporters of the event, including the Western Regional Minister, Kwabena Okyere Darko Mensah, and other dignitaries.

Duker reaffirmed his commitment to supporting teachers and health workers, emphasizing their critical roles in the community.

“I am of the firm belief that teachers and health workers are critical professionals in our communities. Our existence on Earth depends greatly on these two professions, which require the necessary attention and support,” he said.

He encouraged them to continue their exemplary work as the government provides the necessary infrastructure and support to facilitate their duties.

“It is my hope that teachers and health workers will continue giving their best in their line of duty, as we keep delivering the necessary infrastructure and support to ease their work,” he concluded.
