Taxi driver kills armed robber in river

A Taxi driver, Emmanuel Marfo, allegedly overpowered a suspected armed robber, believed to be a Fulani, strangled and killed him in the Nwona River at Soto, near Offinso.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), Edward Oduro – Kwarteng, in charge of the Offinso Police Command, told Ghana News Agency (GNA) that on the October 9, at 1400 hours, eight suspected masked armed robbers, wielding single barrel guns and wearing black uniforms, blocked a section of the road between Soko and Tetrem on the Boama –Kyekyewere Highway.

They attacked and robbed one Francis Anaba, who was riding a motor bike with registration number AS 2068 14, a Taxi driver, Emmanuel Marfo, in charge of a Peugeot 405, with registration number AS 2233 – N, with some market women on board and another victim, Osei Anane, in charge of a Suzuki Private car with registration number AS 8072 Y.

Mr Oduro-Kwarteng said the victims were robbed of their mobile phones and an unspecified amount of money.

He said whilst the robbery was going on, Marfo had the chance to escape into the bush but one of the robbers pursued him.

When they got to the Nwona River, a struggle ensued between them and Marfo overpowered the armed robber and strangled him.

When the Police Patrol team rushed to the scene, the robbers fled but the Police continue to hunt for them.

In a another development, on the October 4, at about 2200 hours, Nana Kwaku Konadu, a Fetish Priest of Nsuontem, near Offinso, also killed a suspected robber, Idrisa Umaru, in a fierce struggle after the robber attempted to shoot him, but failed to discharge the arms.

Nana Konadu was driving his Toyota Rav 4 vehicle with registration number Ba 100-11, driving from Offinso to Nsuontem with two others on board.

On reaching a section of the road at Nsuontem, three men with locally manufactured pistols, machetes and sticks attacked and robbed them of GH? 570.00.

The Police are hunting for the third suspect, who is on the run. He is yet to be identified

The body of Umaru has been deposited at the Saint Patrick’s Hospital for autopsy.
