Teachers call off strike action

The Ghana National Association of Teachers says it will no longer embark on any strike action since the government has indicated its preparedness to implement the Price Water House recommendations.

Addressing a news conference in Accra today, the General Secretary, Mr. Paul Osei-Mensah, said since the decision was taken by the Association to go on strike at the end of last month, there have been some positive developments on the government side.

He cited this year's May Day address by President Rawlings, in which he announced that the government will soon come out with its view on the Price Water House recommendations in the form of a White paper.

Mr. Osei-Mensah also referred to a Technical Committee appointed to test-run the old Salary Scales on the proposed new ones. He said when the Committee finishes its work, a Plenary Session would meet to possibly adopt it. The Price Water House recommendations seek to rectify distortions, disparities and inequities inherent in the country's Wage and Salary Structure.
